The WTA rank their players with a points scoring system determined by her results at a maximum of 16 tournaments for singles and 11 for doubles. The tournaments that count toward a player’s ranking are those that yield the highest points during the rolling 52 week period.

They must include points for Grand Slams, Premier Mandatory tournaments and the BNP Paribas WTA Championships.

The current top five of the WTA world rankings for 2016 are listed below in descending order.

No.1 – Serena Williams

Born 1981 – Right-handed (Two handed backhand) – USA

Serena Williams is one of the most successful women tennis players of all time. She has a career 70 WTA singles titles, 22 doubles titles and has collected nearly $80m in prize money.

Serena has devoted a lot of her time and money to charity, including opening two Secondary Schools in Kenya.

She has always been interested in fashion, with a custom-designed Nike apparel line. She also has her own clothing line (Aneres) and her very successful HSN collection of handbags and jewellry (Serena Williams Signature Statement)

No.2 – Garbine Muguruza

Born 1993 – Right-handed (Two handed backhand) – Venezuela

Garbine has won 3 WTA singles titles, 5 doubles titles, 7 ITF singles titles and 1 ITF doubles titles. She has also won $9m in prize money.
Her mother is from Venezuela and father from Spain and Garbine began playing tennis when she was three. She is an aggressive player preferring hard courts, have favourite shot being the serve.

She enjoys cooking, reading and listening to music, her favourite players were Serena Williams and Pete Sampras.

No.3 – Agnieszka Radwanska

Born 1989 – Right-handed (Two handed backhand) – Poland

Agnieszka has won a career 18 WTA singles titles, 2 double titles, 2 ITF singles and 2 ITF doubles titles. Her prize money to date is $23m.

Her sister, Urszula also plays on the WTA circuit. She grew up playing at a club in Germany where her father was the club pro. Her favourite shot is the forehand and she loves playing on grass.

Her favourite actress is Nicole Kidman and she enjoys listening to Green Day, Black Eyed Peas and Eminem. She admires Pete Sampras.

No.4 – Angelique Kerber

Born 1988 – Left-handed (Two handed-backhand) – Germany

Angelique has won a career 9 WTA singles titles, 11 ITF singles titles and 3 double. Her prize money is $12m.

She likes all surfaces and her teenage idol was Steffi Graf, she also enjoys swimming, soccer, F1, figure skating, handball and shopping,

Her favourite actors include Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz and Reese Witherspoon, her favourite Grand Slam is the Australian Open.

No.5 – Simona Halep

Born 1991 – Right-handed (Two handed backhand) – Romania

Simona has won 12 WTA singles titles, 6 ITF singles titles, and 4 doubles titles. Simona has amassed $13m in prize money.

She is coached by Darren Cahill and is an aggressive baseliner whose favourite shot is the serve and she likes all types of surfaces.

Simona enjoys music, movies and handball. Her favourite food is pasta and she loves orange juice. Her favourite tournament is Roland Garros and her idols are Justine Henin and Roger Federer.
